The Moose Jaw Koseikan Judo Club got a good look at their future this weekend and they had to like what they saw.

Of the 15 local fighters who attended the Saskatchewan Junior/Juvenile championships in Regina Saturday, all would bring home medals, with four claiming gold.

“It was a really good tournament, especially since everyone fought well,” said Koseikan black belt instructor Jim Wiens. “We have a lot of good young kids coming up through the works and a lot of them showed this weekend what they could do.”

One of the most impressive local performances came from Jeremy Williams, who continued his dominance of the juvenile boys under-50 kg division. He won all three of his matches in commanding fashion, easily claiming gold.

“Jeremy has a big advantage in that he’s a left-handed fighter and that really helps keep his opponents off-balance,” Wiens said. “He comes in and he’s attacking to the other side and most of the kids he’s fighting haven’t experienced that before. It really makes a difference.”

Leigh White also went undefeated through his cadet boys under-42 kg draw, posting a 3-0 record on his way to gold. Garth Rivers went 2-1 to take first in the juvenile boys under-49 kg category, while Mark Kerr had little difficulty winning the juvenile boys over-75 kg division with a 2-0 record.

Wiens was equally as impressed with the performance of some of the club’s other medalists. Amy Hughes, who at only five years old was one of the youngest competitors at the tournament, had a good showing in a tough cadet girls under-27 kg division, while club newcomer Tom Glasrud took a victory over a blue belt in the juvenile boys under-75 kg division before settling for silver.

The club next heads to Prince Albert for their final tournament of the season during the Apr. 7 weekend and will be holding a bottle drive Thursday and Friday to raise funds for the trip.
