It's only a few weeks away but if recent results are any indication, the Moose Jaw Koseikan Judo Club could play the role of tough hosts.
The local club is gearing up for their second annual judo tournament at SIAST Palliser Campus Feb. 22 and recently returned home from a meet in Regina, winning an average of one medal per person.
Meaghen Cullen and Vern MacDonald led the way, with Cullen winning three medals and MacDonald winning a pair.
Cullen was undefeated in the juvenile women's under-52 kg. division, easily winning the gold medal. SHe also won the juvenile women's under-48 kg. event and placed third in the senior women's under-48 event.
MacDonald, meanwhile, placed second in the Masters men's 86-plus kg. division and was third in the senior men's 95 plus kg. event.
The Moose Jaw club had one other gold medal winner and two other silver medal winners. Steven Hansen was undefeated in senior men's advanced under-65 kg. event while Jim Wiens managed a second place finish in the senior men's advanced plus-95 kg. event. Tiara Dawm also earned a silver medal in the juvenile women's under-44 kg. event.
Among the third place finishers were Jeff Nelson in the senior men's advanced under-60 kg. event, Levor Guenther in the senior men's novice under-78 kg., Matthew Bespalko in the juvenile men's under-74 kg., Glen Cullen in the juvenile men's under-40 kg. and Danielle Dawm in the juvenile women's under-48 kg.
Other Moose Jaw competitors included Steven Erickson who placed fourth in the juvenile men's under-74 kg. event and Travis Larsen who was fourth in the juvenile men's under-40 kg. event.
Meanwhile, several members of the club earned recent belt promotions including Nelson who was promoted to Brown belt (Ikkyu) and Bespalko and Guenther who were both promoted to Green belt (Sankyu).
Among those promoted to Yellow belt (Gokyu) were Igor Arenzia, Bronson Belisle, Troy Busse, Derek Duzan, Chris Gerry, Kelly Gower, Sandy Junek, Marisa Kerr, Mark Kerr, Connor MacDonald, Andrej Mladineo, Troy Mladineo, Leigh White, Sarah White and Michael Whitfield.
Members of the club will be heading to Swift Current for a meet Saturday before hosting their own meet two weekends later.
